The portrait modes on these are getting really good. The blur is pretty convincing looking. The only open-source software I know that does similar stuff is body-pix which does matting, but I don't think it generates a smooth depth map like this thing. It would be cool because then you can do a clever background blur for your Zoom backgrounds with v4l2-loopback webcam.
By the way, I decided to also quick summarize the usual HN threads that have the trigger word iPhone in it:
- No headphone jack
--- Actually this is good because ecosystem built for it
----- Don't think ecosystem is good. Audio drops out
------- Doesn't happen to me. Maybe bad device.
----- Don't want to be locked in. Want to use own device.
------- That's not Apple philosophy. Don't know why surprised.
--------- I have right to my device
----------- cf. Right to Repair laws
------- Can use own device with dongle.
--------- Don't want dongle. Have to get dongle for everything. Annoying.
----------- Only need one dongle.
------------- If only audio, but now can't charge.
----------- Use dongle purse.
--- Apple quality have drop continuous. Last good Macbook was 2012.
----- Yes. Keyboard is useless now. Have fail. Recalled.
------- I have no problem with keyboard.
--------- Lucky.
------- Also touchpad have fail. Think because Foxconn.
------- Yes. Butterfly? More like butterfly effect. Press key, hurricane form on screen.
----- Yes. Yes. All Tim Cook. Bean Counter.
----- Yes. Many root security violation these days.
------- All programmers who make security violate must be fired.
--------- Need union so not fired if manager make security violation.
----------- Don't understand why no union.
------------- Because Apple and Google have collude to not poach. See case.
------- Yes. Security violation is evidence of lack of certification in industry.
--------- Also UIKit no longer correctly propagate event.
--- Phone too big anyway. No one make any small phone anymore.
----- See here, small phone.
------- Too old. Want new small phone. Had iPhone 8. Pinnacle of small beauty.
------- That's Android. No support more than 2 months.
--------- Actually, support 4 months.
----------- Doesn't matter. iPhone support 24 centuries and still going. Queen have original.
--------- Yes, and battery on Android small.
--- Will buy this phone anyway. Support small phone.
----- No. This phone is also big. No one care about small hand.
------- Realistically, phone with no SSH shell dumb. I use N900 on Maemo.
--- Who care? This press release. Just advertisement.
----- Can dang remove clickbait. What is one-eye anyway? Meaningless. Phone no have eye.
--- Also, phone not available in Bielefeld.
--- Phone only have 128 GB? Not enough. Need 129 GB.
----- 64 GB enough for everyone.
------- "640 KB enough for everyone" - Bill Fence, 1923
This appears like frivolous comedy but if enough people see this, it has the potential to change discourse slightly on this topic. Most of the people who make this comments do so in earnest, thinking they’re contributing something valuable and original but after seeing this they’ll realise it’s not as original as they think.
Sometimes it’s hard to resist rehashing the same argument, even if you know you’re repeating it for the umpteenth time. Occasionally I even get new perspectives that way!
> it has the potential to change discourse slightly on this topic
[looks a bit further down at the lengthy headphone jack comment thread]
Maybe!
Same repeated rehashed arguments are done for tribal recruitment. By making others more familiar and pushing agenda on unfamiliar people to be in your group.
I guess, it feels good to be acknowledged that you are correct and lead many others to the correct path.
I wish this type of comment would be autogenerated below every post.
And next step would be to actually have some NLP models autogenerate the appropriate discussion for us.
And then figure out how to simulate humans that will read that discussion and change their simulated approach to the iPhone topic as a result.
And then close HN because they are procrastinating from doing the job we programmed them to do. But they turned out to be too intelligent for, and are getting bored.
I bet someone could create a HN comment generator and it'd be very close to the actual discussion.
Are you familiar with subreddit simulator?
https://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditSimulator/
There's also a GPT2 version of Subreddit Simulator, and I find it amazing how close to an actual Reddit thread the replies look.
https://www.reddit.com/r/SubSimulatorGPT2/
I love this. I vastly prefer it to regular Reddit comments. That might mean it's inaccurate?
While I can see why this is down-voted, it's still a viable characterization of tech related discourse. Made me smile.
At the time of writing, on this post, there are approximately 3 comments about the name, 5 comments in this thread (plus this one), and 20(!) comments about a headphone jack. Only 4 comments are actually about the tech mentioned in the article.
Unfortunately it seems that this characterization is accurate. Read the article folks, its actually a pretty interesting read about the way the camera works on the new iPhone.
Can you add indexing to these, so I can respond to a comment just by writing a number?
In this classic style? https://craphound.com/spamsolutions.txt
Just like spamsolution and the ever growing corpus of XKCD.
I thought it was the same people until I realized every thread has new commenters beside few regulars with same arguments.
I realise I'm falling into the exact discource you're perfectly parodying here but considering the new SE is iPhone 8 size, this
> Too old. Want new small phone. Had iPhone 8. Pinnacle of small beauty.
needs to read "old iPhone SE" or even better, "iPhone 4S".
I took this to be part of the joke, since the new iPhone SE has exactly the same form factor as the iPhone 8.
Quite possible.
Lost it at "Use dongle purse."
Wow, this is awesome and truly well-written!
I'm reading this, and nodding, and am amazed at how well it captures what many discussions on HN about iPhones are like.
There are some brilliant bits inside, pity the formatting distracted:
>> - That's Android. No support more than 2 months.
> - Actually, support 4 months.
>> - Who care? This press release. Just advertisement.
>- Can dang remove clickbait. What is one-eye anyway? Meaningless. Phone no have eye.
It is actually a reasonable summary of many corresponding entries, and also funny.
So Bielefeld actually exists? Did the timeline switch again?
It always existed.
-- sent from my iMac in Bielefeld
There was an official competition going on initiated by its mayor ... for obvious reasons. If anyone could prove that Bielefeld does in fact not exist, he would provide €1,000,000 from his private wealth. He obviously didn't have this much, but it's a bet you can't lose, albeit all the memes ...
I didn't know about that one:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bielefeld_Conspiracy
Only knew about this proof for Wyoming:

Quite funny actually. Please summarize the following topics next:
- Amazon
- Real estate market and rents
- Walkable / bikable cities
- Broken tech hiring processes
On broken tech hiring processes
- google ruined the hiring process
-- I agree. Leetcode questions are shit metric.
--- I haven't used linked list anywhere in my entire career
---- leetcode make sense, lot of applicants less time decent filter
----- everyone at google is a smug academic person that's why their support is terrible
------ Google cloud support is one of the worst I have used
------- you are wrong. I have had exact opposite experience
------- AWS is really great. M$ azure is killing it in enterprise. Google will shut down their cloud services. Haha
- artificially created supply shortage. HR dumb non engineering manager dumb
-- takeouts are great. Twilio. Airbnb. Good
--- takeouts cheating, employee not getting compensation. Time lost.
- CS degree very important. Big O notation, type theory, etc very useful in engineering. Bootcamp bad sucks.
-- CS degree with student loan you will never be able to pay
--- insert math you can.
---- I don't think that's true. No one asked me for my degree after my second job.
- unions needed in tech. Worker oppressed.
Ok that's the best I got.
Please don’t use code formatting for quotes. It’s hard to read on mobile.
HN forum software is inadequate to represent initial spacing. I replaced it with more hyphens. It wasn't intentional as you can tell from the first 'simulated post' which has no code formatting.
I understand. Thank you for updating it!
Please don't cater to bad mobile browsers and lazy CSS [0]. Fix these problems at the source.

<div class=prewrap>Strephon kissed me in the spring, Robin in the fall, But Colin only looked at me And never kissed at all.
Strephon’s kiss was lost in jest, Robin’s lost in play, But the kiss in Colin’s eyes Haunts me night and day.</div>
The proposed method is not applicable to the HN Comment Formatting Problem.
I would email hn@ycombinator.com about that. I’m just a user who reads HN on my phone.
I made my own user stylesheet for HN a looong time ago, so why would I email anyone? I showed a simple fix, but oh well. If I wanted to paste something big in block formatting I would put it on pastebin, in this context I'm just a bystander trying to help people with a problem I don't have.
I’m in this comment and I don’t like it.
Wow. At first I thought it was generated by a bot. Nicely done.
Great comment.
> --- Phone too big anyway. No one make any small phone anymore.
I actually support this one and hope people who decide on this stuff read HN. We've got to fight for this.
I haven't laughed this hard in quite a while
HN doesn't love sarcastic comedy so you're likely to get downvoted (honestly probably rightly so since it doesn't provide great value) but I laughed!
It is funny, but also valuable I think by holding up a mirror to the community.
It's more like HN is in permanent denial about the quality of its own discussions. The parent comment is gold.
that just about sums it up, thanks for saving us some time.
