Show HN: Kino Transcode – Open Red and Blackmagic Raw Files in the Browser
kino.aiI'm Luke from Kino. We make a video editor + MAM in the browser. Transcode opens Blackmagic RAW, RED R3D, ProRes, DNxHR, and MXF files in the browser (including the famously tricky OP-Atom). You can scrub rapidly, convert to H.264 or ProRes, all without installing anything or uploading footage.
We built this because the film editors and creators we work with still need a desktop app just to look at a clip from these cameras, and we want it to be a link instead.
The BRAW decoder builds on Paul B Mahol's FFmpeg BRAW decoder, which we ported to FFmpeg 8 and extended for newer files. For the R3D decoder, scrubbing uses quarter, eighth and sixteenth resolution, because a full 8K frame takes about 24 seconds on one core. Also, HDR clips convert to Rec.709 when they're tagged as PQ or HLG with BT.2020 colors.
We also built a ProRes encoder+decoder, but we instead merged our efforts with Vanilagy of Mediabunny fame. His turbores implementation is very much worth the hype.
cool this pretty snappy. Annoying trying to find legit file conversion tools online. Will check out the Kino editor
Thanks! We're finally letting people off the waitlist for the proper editor en-masse
