If anyone has the money to spare I'd suggest using $36 to get lifetime ARPA level membership to both SDF.org and SDF-EU.org (so a total of $72). Even if it sits idle. As a way to support the service to continue running. For me the email alone is worth it.
And also the Anime that it got it's name from is on Archive.org
> It's June 16, 1987. Ted Uhlemann ("iczer") plugs an Apple IIe's 300-baud[1] modem into a phone line his mother had just given him for his birthday, running Magic City Micro-BBS (written in Applesoft BASIC). He names it SDF-1 after his favorite anime
Dude was into anime in 1987?? Truly ahead of his time.
Robotech (the americanized version of Macross and some other anime) was broadcast on regular TV (local stations) in 1985. I watched the entire series (I was 12 at the time) with my jaw on the floor. Already The Last Unicorn had shown us what Japanese animation was capable of, and Robotech brought things up a notch (not in terms of animation quality, but in terms of story). Note that Robotech and the original Macross and other series are a bit different. We were watching akira by 1989 or 1990.
I distinctly recall that Robotech had a cross-dressing character well ahead of its time (for american audiences).
Aww I joined as a kid, sent them $1 in the mail and used to hang in com. Then when Facebook was new, had the sdf network in my networks which all my friends wondered what it was. Was running desktop Linux then so never really had a use for it. Would love to know how people have used it over the years

This had far less macross saga than I'd hoped!
I clicked thinking this was going to be a paean to Robotech.

It then goes on to contradict itself immediately, stating the original hardware included a 1200 baud modem - so which was it?

Oh wow, talk about a walk down memory lane! I joined as a kid, almost 30 years ago. Forgot all about this!
down for me, archived: https://web.archive.org/web/20261028045148/https://brennan.d...
Oh this isn't about the anime Macross, just the name inspired by it.
Gosh I do hanker for some fresh new mecha stuff (guess where my HN name is from)
Last one I had was Armored Core 6
have you seen the new Gundam game Rogue Orbit? I am also patiently waiting for Sunrise's Macross
Didn’t care for Mecha Break?
I'm a big macross and gundam fan, but I never could get into armoured core, I always ended up in debt from ammunition costs.
Maybe AI will finally help usher in macross movie after so many years... Ducks
I just signed up for an SDF account and it immediately disconnects me when I SSH in. Why?
I know I'm using the right password from their signup email, because if I type the wrong one I get a different error.
Maybe try a different server ?

But I think more info is needed. like membership level and server you are signing into.

They are blocking China from sending emails to @sdf.org accounts. Shame on them.
