San Francisco now but originally from Philadelphia.

I bet the SF Bay Area probably has the highest concentration of HN readers than any other specific part of the US.

  • skinnymuch 17 years ago

Probably. And then near the new york area next. Good 'ol Silicon (V)alley.

  • ohkanon 17 years ago

From the Bay Area too. Specifically Fremont. Silicon Valley is amazing for tech advances huh?

  • timtrueman 17 years ago

I'd love to see a poll of Bay Area versus non Bay Area, although I bet it would be unsurprising.

  • catone 17 years ago

    Yup, in Boston.

    • markbao 17 years ago

Is there a HN meetup in Boston? If not, I'd be happy to organize one.

michaelkeenan 17 years ago

Can you put your location in your profile please? It would be great to be able to search for HN denizens by city.

  • tokenadult 17 years ago

Can you put your location in your profile please?

Done. Minnetonka, Minnesota here. It's interesting to see that you are in Taiwan now. That's where I learned everything I know about being entrepreneurial, which is not yet enough.

    • HeyLaughingBoy 17 years ago

Hey, that's the closest so far. I live in southern Scott Co. Minnesota, but I work about 15 min. from Minnetonka.

  • lucumo 17 years ago

That's a great idea. I've put mine in.

Pittsburgh! :) I'd email you but I already belong to the mail lists for Dorkbot, Refresh, Devhouse, etc and don't want duped emails. :)

    • rms 17 years ago

Not much of a mailing list here... basically every two months or so myself or Ed think that we should probably have a meetup and then we email other people to figure out times that work.

        • whatusername 17 years ago

          Count me in as #5.

          • tdm911 17 years ago

Frequent reader, less frequent poster and #6 from Melbourne (Geelong to be exact!)

            • markm 17 years ago

Just got back from Melbourne, (Toronto, ON), loved it and will return, and I just kept thinking 'If there was a start-up culture in Melbourne, I'd move there in 2 seconds!' - and now there are 6 responding to the thread, :)

              • tdm911 17 years ago

'If there was a start-up culture in Melbourne, I'd move there in 2 seconds!'

Whilst it's not huge, it's certainly growing. Silicon Beach is a community pushing technology innovation in Melbourne (and the rest of Australia). You can read a little more about it here: http://melbourne.siliconbeachaustralia.org/about-2/ and here: http://www.rosshill.com.au/article/silicon-beach-melbourne/

                • joshsharp 17 years ago

Count me in as well. Good to see some people here I know on Twitter, but wasn't aware of on HN.

                  • rosshill 17 years ago

Melbourne / Geelong here too! I was impressed when I put the SB blog post above together too. There is a nice range of events happening, and a good amount of code happening too :)

            • sho 17 years ago

I am surprised to see such a strong Melbournian contingent. Maybe the rain keeps you indoors, nothing to do but program? ;)

Sydney here, although going back to Tokyo for summer. (Reference for Melbourne residents: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer)

  • rdouble 17 years ago

I'm in SF, but my sister lives on the Bellarine Peninsula. I've spent about 6 weeks in Australia and love it. If anyone has info about startups hiring in Melbourne or Geelong I'd love to hear about them.

    • joshsharp 17 years ago

You're in SF and you want to move to Melbourne for a startup? That's the inverse of what I always hear about... ;)

      • rdouble 17 years ago

I've been here doing startup type work for ages. Wouldn't mind spending some time down under.

  • froo 17 years ago

ashishk 17 years ago

NYC anyone?

  • conesus 17 years ago

    Right here, too.

NYC seems to be an attractor to tech. Maybe it's Pecha Kucha. Or maybe a very well attended Ignite. Tech Meet-up anyone?

Or it could be Williamsburg... and the creatives it attracts.

  • arjungmenon 17 years ago

    Close to NYC: Long Island.

    • stevenm 17 years ago

next to stony brook too, contact me - xtac@ymail.com

    • Zev 17 years ago

I'm from Nassau, but up near Rochester for college. If that counts as being on Long Island.

  • Alex3917 17 years ago

In case anyone here isn't already on it, there is a mailing list for HN readers in the NYC area:

    http://groups.google.com/group/nyyc

Traffic is basically non-existent, but it's useful to be subscribed because we use it to organize meetups every few months.

  • agotterer 17 years ago

sho 17 years ago

Well, that's a decent number of samples - as of right now, 323 yanks, 324 non-yanks. Even taking into account timezone and foreigners-eager-to-represent-their-country selection bias, that's pretty surprising.

So according to this profoundly unscientific and unrepresentative poll, about half the world's (english speaking, community-seeking) startup talent is concentrated in the USA, and about half everywhere else. Interesting.

Do you think it would be better to add an entirely separate category for San Francisco and area? I suspect that while they're not as overrepresented as some may think, there may be a sizable number that could be broken from the US.

  • dustineichler 17 years ago

great, i was working to raise money (for a little while at least) to send olpc's to some of the more rural areas in lima. i'm pervian as well(%).

what's the technology scene there like? it'd be interesting to bridge my work between here (sf) and lima. pico alto is an astounding beach.

    • ptn 17 years ago

We are pretty behind, technology wise. We don't have iPhones in vending machines, they are a little expensive here (the iPhones). Some industries use machines more than 20 years old. The only startup product used here is Facebook. But Lima isn't bad, in the more rural areas, you'd be lucky to see a car that isn't falling apart. There's probably 20 guys total with internet connection.

Sweet. I didn't know Wufoo guys are from Tampa. "Bay Area" reminds me of my trip to Silicon Valley in 2007 when everyone asked me if I was from the "bay area" and I kept saying "yes, but the other one, with hurricanes."

  • rms 17 years ago

Hey, can you send me an email? I import an herb that grows in Indonesia and if I can secure it at less than the prevailing wholesale price me and a wholesaler could make millions of dollars.

    • sho 17 years ago

Just wait a while, you might be able to buy your, uh, "herb" right over the counter in California soon enough.

      • rms 17 years ago
